You can look at a pond one day and see clear water.
Come back a few days later, and suddenly it has a green tint, floating patches, or a thick layer of algae near the surface.
It can seem like the algae appeared out of nowhere.
It didn’t.
A visible algal bloom is usually the result of several conditions coming together at the right time. What looks like a sudden event is often a process that has been developing beneath the surface for days or even weeks.
What Makes Water Turn Green?
The green colour is often associated with algae or microscopic organisms called phytoplankton.
Like plants, many algae use sunlight to produce energy through photosynthesis. They also need nutrients to grow.
When sufficient sunlight, nutrients, suitable temperatures, and favourable water conditions occur at the same time, algae can multiply rapidly.
This rapid increase in algae is known as an algal bloom.
And that’s where things get interesting.
It Isn’t Always About “Dirty” Water
A common assumption is that a green pond must simply be dirty.
Not necessarily.
Even a relatively clean-looking body of water can experience an algal bloom if the environmental conditions are favourable.
Nutrients can enter water from many sources, including:
- Fertiliser runoff
- Decaying leaves and vegetation
- Soil erosion
- Animal waste
- Stormwater runoff
- Wastewater and other nutrient sources
Nitrogen and phosphorus are particularly important because they can support rapid biological growth.
The issue isn’t simply the presence of nutrients.
It’s the combination of nutrients and environmental conditions.
Why Does It Sometimes Happen So Quickly?
Algae can reproduce rapidly when conditions are favourable.
Imagine a pond receiving several days of strong sunlight while temperatures rise and nutrients are available in the water.
The algae already present in the pond suddenly have conditions that allow them to grow much faster.
What started as a population too small to notice can become visible within a relatively short period.
This is why an algal bloom can appear to happen almost overnight.
The change may be sudden to us, but the biological process was already underway.
Weather Can Play a Bigger Role Than Expected
Weather doesn’t just affect how a pond looks from the outside.
It can change the conditions inside the water.
Periods of warm weather can encourage biological activity, while rainfall can wash nutrients from surrounding land into ponds and reservoirs.
Then there is sunlight.
More sunlight means more energy available for photosynthetic organisms near the surface.
However, weather isn’t always as simple as “more rain equals more algae.” Heavy rainfall can also temporarily dilute or disturb a water body.
The outcome depends on the characteristics of the pond, the amount and type of nutrients entering it, temperature, water movement, and other environmental factors.
Why Doesn’t the Whole Pond Turn Green at Once?
Water isn’t necessarily uniform from top to bottom.
Temperature differences can cause layers to form within deeper bodies of water, while wind and circulation can move water around or leave certain areas relatively undisturbed.
Algae also tend to concentrate where light is available.
This means one part of a pond can look noticeably different from another.
You might see green water near the surface while deeper water remains relatively clear.
In other situations, algae may collect along edges or in areas where water movement is limited.
When the Bloom Dies, Another Problem Can Begin
An algal bloom doesn’t necessarily last forever.
When algae die, microorganisms break down the organic material.
That decomposition process consumes oxygen.
If a large amount of organic material decomposes in a confined or poorly circulated area, dissolved oxygen levels can decrease.
This can create additional stress for aquatic organisms and further change the conditions within the water.
So an algal bloom isn’t simply a matter of water changing colour.
It can influence the broader physical and biological conditions of the water body.
Green Doesn’t Always Mean the Same Thing
Another important point is that not every green-coloured pond has the same cause.
Different types of algae and other microorganisms can produce different colours, textures, and patterns.
Some blooms may appear bright green. Others can look blue-green, brownish, or form floating mats.
Some cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae, can also form blooms and certain species can produce toxins.
Because appearance alone cannot reliably identify the organism or determine whether a bloom is harmful, unusual blooms should not simply be assumed to be harmless based on colour.
The Bigger Lesson
A pond doesn’t suddenly become a different ecosystem just because we can suddenly see the change.
The green colour is often the visible result of changes that have been happening beneath the surface.
Sunlight, temperature, nutrients, rainfall, circulation, biological activity, and decomposition can all interact to shape what happens in a body of water.
That is why understanding water means looking beyond what is immediately visible.
Sometimes, the most noticeable change is only the final part of a much longer process.
The next time a pond suddenly turns green, the better question isn’t “Where did all that algae come from?”
It’s:
“What changed in the environment that allowed it to grow so quickly?”
